The Holy Scriptures refer to the Mother of God using the names “full of grace” and “blessed,” and as the only one amongst all women to have found grace before God. The first person to bless the Theotokos was Elizabeth, who, having been filled with the Holy Spirit, exclaimed with a loud voice, “blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb."
The Theotokos herself spoke prophetically when she said: “behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed” (Lk. 1:48). Indeed! Ever since that time, the Mother of God has been praised by the ensuing generations of Christians.
