Fasting was the first commandment God gave to man. “And the Lord God commanded Adam,” say the Holy Scriptures, “from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you may not eat” (Gen. 2:16-17).
Fasting is the first virtue that man is called to carry out. This is why the first thing the Lord Jesus Christ did after His baptism was to fast for forty days.
We were exiled from Paradise in the past because we did not fast. Therefore, let us fast now, in order to regain entry into Paradise.
